Same as last year, we once again access ourselves. A veiled attempt to discern personal ideals, and just like last year’s assessment day also featured ideological questions masked as reading comprehension. The readings were about anti-abortion sentiments, which had the effect of broadcasting a particular side of the story while also garnering opinion on the subject. This was achieved by asking questions designed to ‘test’ an individual’s understanding of reading material. And now I am asked to describe my feelings about the creation of a Gay and Lesbian Forum? It seems to me this activity is not designed to test my various skills. This activity seems to want my opinion on whether we should have such a forum. I don’t understand why such discussion is needed. If people want to gather in a group and about a mutual connection, the college should support it. We have groups for people in sports religion, and a variety of academic disciplines. We have non-curriculum groups such as the Black Student Alliance. If people, including staff and faculty desire to group together as a Gay and Lesbian Forum, Great, have fun. Will I sign such a petition? Probably not, but I would explain that I don’t think permission should be required. Do we not have the freedom to gather freely and exercise our right to speech and assembly, Right? College is about education, right? So if a student has queries about things, especially when such things can have huge effects in our life; shouldn’t free and open discussion help everyone involved? And if such discussion bothers or offends any particular individual, let that person exercise the freedom to not participate. I myself don’t like football, which makes me something of an aberration, so to voice openly my opinion that maybe we spend a disproportional amount of time, and money on football, when compared to academics and even other sports is tantamount to hearsay. But other people have their freedom to enjoy football. There to think that people would have to petition to form any sort of group seems to contravene the idea of foster the free flow of ideas. And then to think someone might hypothesize such a thing is kind of stupid
So spring is upon us, but its going to be 41 degrees tonite, and the flooded Red River just had a blizzard roll thur, witness the wonders of climate change
